Before And After Eye Lid Surgery

Patient 1 Before And Seven Months After Lower Blepharoplasty Surgery

My Blepharoplasty Before and After

These photos show a woman in her mid-40s before and after lower blepharoplasty surgery. Prior to surgery, she has large under eye bags which make her look tired even when she is fully rested. Removing the under eye bags helps her look awake and refreshed. Notice how she still looks natural and doesnt look like she has had surgery.

Keep Your Eyes On The Prize

Youâre not going to look great for a short time. Your eyelids will be puffy, your incisions will appear red, and the swelling and bruising may resemble a black eye. This is a hard time for most of our patients because theyâre anxious to see results. Donât let recovery time get you down.

The swelling goes away in about two weeks. Shortly after that, youâll see the change â and what a difference it will make. Youâll look younger, your eyes will look brighter, and youâll feel on top of the world.

Prepare For Your Recovery Time

Most people get back to their normal activities in about 10-14 days after eyelid surgery, but you should be prepared to take time off to let your eyelids heal. A good way to speed your recovery is to cover your primary responsibilities ahead of time.

Whether you need to stock the pantry with easy-to-prepare foods or ask a friend to take children to their activities, itâs important to clear your schedule so that you can focus on resting.

Deep Orbital Hemorrhage And Severe Vision Loss

What do scars after eyelift (blepharoplasty) look like? Lara Devgan ...

Deep orbital hemorrhage with vision loss is a rare complication of eyelid surgery. Following cosmetic blepharoplasty, the incidence of orbital hemorrhage after surgery has been estimated to be 1:2000 , with orbital hemorrhage resulting in permanent visual loss in 1:10,000 .21 Orbital hemorrhage usually occurs within the first 24 hours following surgery but can appear up to a week after surgery. Therefore, it is recommended that operating surgeons should remain readily available to their patients for at least 24 hours after surgery in the event of excessive postoperative bleeding.

Incision of the orbital septum and manipulation of orbital fat are likely prerequisites for blindness resulting from postoperative orbital hemorrhage. Hemorrhage within the orbit may result from traction on orbital fat, resection of orbital fat with unidentified intraoperative bleeding, or posterior extension of wound hemorrhage that often results from delayed bleeding in patients with poorly controlled systemic hypertension. Vision loss may ensue from microvascular compression that leads to ischemic optic neuropathy.22,23,24,25 It has also been postulated that a tense orbit may exceed the mean arterial pressure of the ophthalmic artery or central retinal artery resulting in central retinal artery occlusion.26,27,28,29,30,31,32 With prompt treatment vision loss can be reversible after retrobulbar hemorrhage.27,28,33,34 Rarely, severe proptosis with exposure keratopathy can also occur.

Surgery can be truly life changing for these patients, as they are often reminded of their issue multiple times a day when people ask them if they are tired.

Take Time To Research The Procedure Too

Once youve found a surgeon with plenty of blepharoplasty experience, its important to keep doing your homework and completely understand the eyelid surgery youre planning on having. Dr. Guy Massry, a Beverly Hills, California, oculoplastic surgeon, suggests asking specific questions about your problem area and looking at several recent before and after pictures, to make sure the surgeon has proven results that are in line with what youre looking for.

Since some of the aging changes of the eyelid involve atrophy of fat in the lower eyelid and a loss of the smooth lower lid-cheek junction, filling this area with fat or some other filler can have a dramatic effect on the appearance of the lower lid. Your surgeon will determine if you are a good candidate for this approach. In addition, fine wrinkles and minor blemishes of the lower eyelid can be treated with a chemical peel.

During Your Blepharoplasty Procedure

Eyelid surgery can be performed on your upper and lower eyelids, or both.

Eyelid surgery can be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. The average blepharoplasty procedure lasts 1 to 2 hours.

During your procedure, your plastic surgeon will carefully create very small incisions that follow the natural crease of your eyelids. Through those incisions, he or she can remove excess skin and/or fatty tissue, as well as reposition the remaining skin and tissue to help achieve a tighter, more youthful look.

A great way to start is by reading reviews and researching surgeons in your area. Finding the right surgeon requires going beyond their credentials, which will take a little extra time.

With all elective surgeries, I feel that the better a patient is educated, the more gratified they will be, says Dr. Adam Tattelbaum, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Rockville, Maryland. Speaking with, interviewing, and learning from your prospective surgeon is the best way to have a good comfort levelif it doesnt feel right or expectations dont seem realistic, its time to move on .

Additionally, Dr. Tattelbaum explains that when choosing a plastic surgeon for your eyelid surgery, its important to choose one who is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. It indicates that the surgeon has gone through extensive and specific training to perform these procedures, says Dr. Tattelbaum. In this case, its one of the easiest ways to feel confident that your surgeon has extensive blepharoplasty experience.

Bilateral Upper Blepharoplasty And Direct Brow Lift

This patient had significant amounts of sagging skin affecting the upper eyelid. However, blepharoplasty alone would not be sufficient to fully deal with the problem as there was also significant brow descent causing compaction of the upper eyelid tissues. There is always a wide choice of brow lifting techniques, but given the extent of the brow droop, only a direct brow lift would provide a sufficiently powerful lift. This procedure requires a small incision above the brow hairline which usually settles well. The patient elected for an upper lid blepharoplasty and direct brow lift with excellent results.

Bilateral upper and lower lid blepharoplasty with internal browpexySkin treatments with Profhilo

Upper lid blepharoplasty was performed along with an internal browpexy to raise the brow and to relieve the upper lid compaction caused by crowding of the brow. Profhilo treatments were undertaken postoperatively to reduce lines and create a gentle lift throughout the face.

Incision And Scar Abnormalities

Pin on Before and After Results

Numbness involving the upper eyelid skin and eyelashes is a common, expected outcome after upper eyelid crease incisions in blepharoplasty or blepharoptosis repair. Vertically oriented sensory nerve fibers from the supraorbital, supratrochlear, and lacrimal nerves travel in the preorbicular plane, suborbicular fascial plane, and within the orbicularis muscle.103 These distal branches of the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve are transected during supratarsal eyelid crease incision for blepharoplasty and ptosis repair.104 Recovery from new nerve growth and collateral sprouting may take several weeks or months.105

Most significant eyelid scar abnormalities can be avoided by appropriate incision placement, minimal tissue manipulation, and appropriate suture selection, tension, and removal. Excessive thermal damage from electrocautery or defocusing of the laser can result in hypertrophic scarring. Asian patients and those with a history of keloid formation may be at increased risk of hypertrophic scar formation. True keloid formation in the eyelids is exceedingly rare. Local corticosteroid injections should be considered with caution due to the risk of dermal atrophy and skin depigmentation.

Sequestered epithelial remnants may form small whitish-yellow inclusion cysts along the suture line. These may atrophy in 2 to 3 months or are simply managed without anesthesia by uncapping of the cyst and marsupialization with an 18-gauge needle.

Caring For Yourself After Your Surgery

Follow these guidelines to care for yourself after your surgery.

  • Wear dark sunglasses during your trip home. You may be sensitive to light.
  • The ointment used during your surgery may make your vision blurry. This is temporary and usually goes away within 24 hours.
  • Dont wear contact lenses until at least 2 weeks after your surgery. You can wear eyeglasses.
  • Do not drive until you have stopped taking pain medication and no longer have blurry vision. Make sure that you can safely and comfortably drive a car. This is usually about 5 to 10 days after surgery.
  • Its important to get quiet, peaceful rest during the first 3 to 4 days after your surgery. To do this:
  • Avoid activities such as heavy lifting and exercise.
  • Let your healthcare provider know if youre having nausea or cold symptoms. Its important for you to avoid sneezing, coughing, and vomiting , as much as you can. These can raise your blood pressure and cause bleeding at your surgical sites.
  • Avoid bending at the waist or lifting items heavier than 5 pounds for 4 to 6 weeks after your surgery. Talk with your surgeon before going back to your usual activities, such as lifting and exercise.
  • Rest and sleep with your head raised on 2 to 3 pillows for 2 weeks or as directed by your surgeon. This will help prevent swelling at your surgical sites.
  • Your eyes may look swollen and bruised after your surgery. The eyelid swelling is usually worse early in the morning and will get better during the day as you sit or walk around.

Following eyelid surgery, your doctor will advise that you avoid makeup and stop wearing contacts for at least a week. However, most doctors recommend you wait two weeks in order to give your eyelids enough time to fully recover. Waiting two weeks will help guarantee the incision area is healed and minimize the risk of infection from applying makeup. In general, touching your eyelids as little as possible will also help reduce swelling.

Additionally, make sure youre protecting your eyes from wind, sun, and other elements, as these can also negatively affect your recovery process. Until youre fully healed, consider wearing a big hat and sunnies, to help shield your eyes whenever youre outside.

You might also experience redness and dry eyes after a blepharoplasty. Some doctors will prescribe eye drops, to help. If you already suffer from dry eyes, make sure to discuss that with your surgeon prior to the procedure.
