What Happens During Gynecomastia Surgery

In some cases, surgeons only use liposuction to remove breast tissue. They insert a suction hose through several small incisions to remove fat.

If you have excess skin, fat and tissue, your provider may recommend excision. This technique uses larger incisions to remove breast tissue. Your provider can also reposition your nipple and areola during an excision procedure. The incision patterns, lengths and locations depend on the size of your breasts and your desired look.

You may need a combination of excision and liposuction. Your surgeon will recommend the technique thats right for you. Before either technique, youll get general anesthesia through a vein in your arm. Youll be asleep throughout the procedure and wont feel pain during surgery.

A note from Cleveland Clinic

Gynecomastia surgery is an effective treatment for enlarged male breast tissue. This procedure can help you feel more confident and boost your self-esteem. It can also reduce discomfort or pain that can result from excess breast tissue, especially while doing activities that require jumping and running. But, as with any surgery, there are risks. When considering this procedure, have an open and honest discussion with your provider. Talk to your provider about your desired outcome, so you can set realistic goals together.

What To Expect After Treatment

Excellent results are expected with gynecomastia surgery performed by an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon. Complications may occur but are rare. The most common complications are recurrence or scar indentations.. Most patients who have this surgery are very happy with the results and regret not exploring surgical options sooner. Most patients return to work within a few days when liposuction alone is required, or within 1 week, when excision is necessary.

What Is Gynecomastia Surgery Like

The operation takes 11.5 hours and requires general anesthesia. It can be performed as day surgery. The recovery time is usually 3-4 weeks depending on the amount of tissue and skin removed. A drain may be placed to limit the amount of fluid collection or swelling post-operatively. This is usually removed within the first week.

At the end of the procedure, you will be placed in a compression garment or vest. This compression is very important to achieve the best result. The creation of small tunnels by the removal of fat leaves the potential for blood or serum to collect in these channels. This may lead to scar formation, ridges, wavy appearance and ultimately, an unsatisfactory result. This supportive vest will need to be worn day and night to keep constant pressure on the treated areas. You may remove it to shower only. It is not uncommon to wear the garment for 3 4 weeks following surgery and then intermittently for several more weeks while you become more active. Activity should also be limited to normal, light duty at work, normal chores and walking. You should not return to full activity or exercise for 4-6 weeks.

Although you will see some change upon removal of the garment for the first time, the final contour may not be seen for several months due to swelling and bruising. The swelling and bruising may be quite pronounced and may extend beyond the treated areas. This will subside over 3-5 weeks.

Rest gives your body time to heal.

You should also avoid activity or movements, like exercise, that can aggravate your stitches and impair your recovery.

Unfortunately, we cant provide an exact answer to this each case is unique, after all.

Not only that, but it also depends on how your recovery goes. If you heal faster than expected, you might be able to ease off the brakes earlier.

As a general rule however, men who undergo the procedure should schedule in at least 2-3 weeks of rest, adding a couple more weeks to get back to 100%.

Gynecomastia surgery is usually an outpatient procedure, which means you go home the same day. Youll need to arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery. Your provider will tell you how to care for yourself and how to take care of your incisions when you go home.

Youll have bandages and a supportive garment around your chest as you heal. The garment supports your chest and reduces swelling. Your provider will give you medications to relieve pain. These drugs also reduce swelling and lower the risk of infection.

Your provider may place thin tubes under your skin during surgery. The tubes drain fluid and blood during the healing process. The fluid collects at the bottom of the tube in a receptacle or bulb. Your provider will remove the tubes when you no longer need them.

Exercise Before And After Gynecomastia Surgery

Were pleased that so many of our New York City gynecomastia patients are fitness-minded, and were happy to share information about how to modify workout schedules to accommodate male breast reduction surgery.

Before Gynecomastia Surgery

Patients sometimes ask about exercising before male breast reduction surgery to build chest muscles. We do encourage our patients to pursue good health and we applaud those who work out but its not a necessary step in preparing for the procedure.

You also dont need to stop working out before you come in for male breast reduction. We would suggest you dont exhaust yourself the night before surgery so you have plenty of energy in reserve for recovery, but a mild to moderate workout is fine.

After Gynecomastia Surgery

Avoiding Common Mistakes

One of the most common mistakes men make when recovering from gynecomastia surgery is misunderstanding the reason for avoiding strenuous exercise for a few weeks. Occasionally one of our New York City gynecomastia patients will think, Im more fit than the average guy, I can take it, and grab the free weights too soon. Others go back to their regular exercise circuit the first day back at the gym, without resuming the routine a little at a time.

After all, shrinking those man boobs as fast as possible is what its all about, right?
