Can you have a drink of alcohol before surgery?

Most medical professionals will agree that you should hold off on drinking alcohol for at least 24 hours before surgery. However, the longer you abstain the better.

Why Can You Drink Alcohol So Long After Surgery

Surgeries usually involve anesthesia, pain medications, incisions, etc. Alcohol can have serious interaction with these. It is better to avoid alcohol after the surgeries as it could lead to several complications.

Alcohol consumption post-surgery can delay the healing process. It also leads to thinning of the blood. It is a grave issue as it could lead to prolonged bleeding. It also allows for the development of infections. In short, alcohol reduces the effectiveness of the immune system of the body.

Since the immune system is weak, it paves the way for several infections in the body. Pneumonia is one of the common occurrences in patients who consume alcohol after undergoing their surgeries.

Alcohol consumption can widen an individuals blood vessels, which can lead to swelling. This swelling can cause further complications. Swelling can be there due to the surgical procedure, which eventually worsens due to consumption of alcohol.

One of the major complications is the reaction between the medications and alcohol. Its side effects include fainting, headache, vomiting, rashes, respiratory issues, etc.

Due to all these reasons, it is advisable to give the body proper time to heal and recover. This can take up to 2 weeks but, this time may vary from case to case. It depends a lot on the patients medical history, the procedure the patient went through, and a large number of factors as well.

How Much Is Too Much

Studies on the risks of drinking before surgery have tended to look at people who regularly drink to excess. In these people, benefits have been seen when theyve stopped drinking altogether for at least a few weeks before surgery. Drinking low to moderate levels of alcohol is unlikely to increase your risk of complications after surgery. However, the more you drink, the greater your risk. Even just two or three drinks a day can be enough to start having a negative impact on your immune system.

The UK government advises that you shouldnt regularly drink more than 14 units of alcohol a week. Fourteen units is the equivalent of six pints of average-strength beer, or six medium glasses of average-strength wine.

Drinking within these recommendations should keep any health risks to a low level.

Can I Drink After Laser Eye Surgery

Oli

Dr. Matthew Russell explains if you can drink after laser eye surgery

Our recommendation is that you dont drink immediately after laser surgery. You will have had a sedative to take before the surgery and there can be an interaction between the sedative and alcohol. Youll be very relaxed already and I suspect you wont need any alcohol the night after surgery. Youll be surprisingly relaxed after that.

The very next day, however, the effects of that sedative will have worn off and it is absolutely fine to have a normal amount of alcohol the following day if youve had LASIK surgery done. If youve had surface laser or PRK laser for the first two to three days after treatment, your eyes will be uncomfortable and your vision will be affected by the laser treatment and we would recommend not drinking alcohol until your vision has recovered three to four days after the treatment.

What To Expect With Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is typically an outpatient procedure, meaning you do not have to remain in the hospital after the surgery. The surgery itself usually takes an hour or less to perform, and is conducted by an ophthalmologist. It is an entirely painless procedure as you will receive local anesthetics to numb the eye, and will likely receive a sedative to help you relax.

Immediately following the surgery, you will need assistance driving home and your vision may be blurry initially as your eye adjusts to its new normal and begins to heal. Your vision should begin improving within the first few days, but you may experience some itchiness or mild discomfort during that time.

You will have appointments with your eye doctor to monitor the healing process, and should expect to be fully healed from the surgery around one month from the operation. While your vision will be much improved , most people will still need glasses after cataract surgery at least some of the time.

Can I Drink Alcohol The Day Before Cataract Surgery

On the day of surgery, do not eat or drink anything for a minimum of 8 hours before surgery. Please refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages for up to 24 hours prior to the procedure. Wear clean and comfortable clothes on the day of surgery, shower and wash your hair, and do not wear any makeup.

The Do’s And Don’ts After Your Cataract Surgery:

Immediately after the procedure, your ophthalmologist will give you a list of things you can and cant do. Following their instructions is extremely important to ensuring a quick and successful recovery. Take their advice seriously and dont be scared to ask any questions along the way.

While everyones recovery period is different and your eye doctor will likely give you instructions specific to your eye, lets go over some of the general dos and donts following cataract surgery — starting with the things you can do:

Getting Boozy On The Day Of The Treatment

Before we get to that, lets be clear that if you have a heavy night of drinking before heading for your appointment, the clinic will likely refuse to perform the procedure. Sorry, just how it is.

Unsurprisingly, then, if you have a boozy brunch on the day of treatment, theres no way youll be cleared for surgery you probably wont even make it past reception.

Its not often we have to turn people away because theyre wandering the corridors a little bit drunk, but alcohol is still a familiar problem on the day of surgery. Not so much from drinking it, but wearing it.

Using or wearing anything with high alcohol content like hair spray, perfume, cologne, or mousse is to be avoided on the day of the procedure. These can affect the transmission of the laser beam. The environment in the laser room is very carefully controlled so that the laser beam travels through the air without bumping into anything on the way to the eyes surface.

Similarly, any products containing chemicals or small particles like makeup, eyeliner, eye shadow, or mascara should be removed before coming in for surgery. This is one of the reasons why its convenient to take the full day of the surgery off work. You can relax at home and not worry about doing anything or seeing anyone but the takeaway delivery bod.

In This Interview Alex Shortt Talks About The Impact Of Alcohol After Laser Eye Surgery And Why It Is Actually Good For You To Have A Glass Or Two

Interviewer: Can I drink after laser eye surgery?

Alex Shortt: I personally recommend you drink after laser eye surgery. Seriously, taking alcohol after laser eye surgery is not going to have any effect whatsoever.

And its quite common for people to celebrate, to go from the clinic to a wine bar around the corner and have a glass of champagne to celebrate. And thats absolutely fine.

Interviewer: Really? Doesnt it cause dehydration?

Alex Shortt: Well, everything in moderation. Whats more important is that you stick to the eye drop regime we give you. The eye drops are used every hour for two days, and then after that, you reduce them down. So as long as you comply with the eye drops, theres no harm with having a drink.

The Sobering Effects Of Alcohol On The Body

Cataract Management in Apopka

Alcohol is a depressant not in a sense it makes you empty the fridge and sob whilst listening to Elton John at 4 in the morning it slows down and depresses the bodys vital functions.

Many of us are very familiar with how this affects us on the outside things like slowed speech, uncoordinated movements, impaired judgement, and poor reaction time. But what is this doing to us on the inside?

Ever slipped and scraped your knee on a night out, and whatever you did, you couldnt stop the blood from flowing? Well, one thing alcohol does is affect the bloods ability to clot. This can lead to problems controlling blood loss during surgery and managing swelling after a procedure. And you know, the pounding headaches and dry mouth you get the day after a big one? You can thank that to alcohol disrupting your ability to absorb and retain water.

The risks of alcohol and Laser Eye Surgery, while less problematic, still exist.

Dangers Of Alcohol After Surgery Depend On Your Type Of Surgery

Minor surgeries affect the body very differently than major surgeries. For example, alcohol use after surgery with minimal sedation is typically safer. Here’s why:

Minor surgery:

  • Does not require general anesthesia. You’re never hospitalized.
  • Short surgery, such as less than 30 minutes total time.
  • Have small surgical incisions . Think of a small biopsy.
  • Do not need opioid pain medications .

Always ask your doctor or surgeon when it is safe to drink alcohol after surgery. In general, you can drink alcohol the following day after minor surgery. In small operations, alcohol does not have a significant impact on your recovery.
