Adding A Little Surgery To R& r In Costa Rica

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica–After gastric bypass surgery last September, Gail Burns lost 75 pounds, bringing the 5-foot-6-inch former real estate agent down to 165 pounds. Although happy with the weight loss, Burns now had loose and sagging skin.

“I needed a tummy tuck,” said Burns, 55, who began contacting plastic surgeons in the Atlanta area where she lives. On a budget, she wanted a breakdown of the costs and a total, but doctors would only give estimates. When one estimate hit $18,000, Burns took her research to the Internet, and soon surfed her way to an obesity surgery site group on Yahoo .

“And that,” she said, “is where I heard about Costa Rica.”

Fast forward six months. It’s April, and Burns is in San Jose, Costa Rica, recovering from surgery performed at the Rosenstock-Lieberman Center for Cosmetic Plastic Surgery, one of the largest centers for plastic surgery in that country. Not only did she have a $3,500 tummy tuck, but also a $2,800 face lift and a $1,500 liposuction procedure for her waist. The prices included doctors’ fees, facility costs and overnight stay, anesthesiology, a personal nurse and medications. Her cost beyond the round-trip plane fare was $70 per night at Che Tica, an 80-acre recovery retreat she selected for her 13-night stay. The cost included her room, meals, transportation to and from the doctor’s office for appointments, and general care.

Fournier stresses the importance of knowing why you want the surgery and what your expectations are.

How About The Levels Of Safety With Plastic Surgery In Costa Rica

Plastic surgery is the type of procedure that one will be more likely to get done if a family member has done, and even after encouragement and referrals, many are worried about how safe it is to get this kind of work done. With any surgery, there is risk of infection, and for something like breast implants, it carries a higher risk then a nose job.

Testimonials on the web say that overall procedures such as liposuction on the sides have a pretty minimal amount of pain, and patients here that have undergone procedures on local anesthetic have gotten through the process just fine. For all of the modern elements and over-sterile environment that it seems these facilities may lack, the extra consultation time with doctors is what many who come here love, and makes them feel even safer.

When it comes right down to it, many of the elements of hospitals and plastic surgery centers in the States that are selling points are incredibly cosmetic. The amount of money that is put into the structure of a building and extras simply cannot make up for the amount of attention you get, and that is one of the traits that makes these facilities in Costa Rica safe.

How Long Should I Stay In Costa Rica For A Facelift Procedure

You should be able to leave the hospital on the same day of the surgery if local anesthetic is used. However, if the surgery is done under general anesthetic, you may need to stay in the hospital for about 1 to 2 days. You should plan to stay in Costa Rica for around 7 to 10 days following the surgery because you will have to attend follow-up checkups. During the checkups, your surgeon will monitor your healing and remove your stitches.

What You Need To Know About Facelift In Costa Rica

A facelift, also referred to as rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgery that aims to restore a more youthful facial appearance. It can reduce sagging or folds of skin on the cheeks, jawline, and other areas in the face that changes shape due to aging.

As we age, our skin loses their elasticity and become looser. Fat deposits also decrease in some areas and increase in others. This leads to sagging and wrinkles. With a facelift, these problems can be addressed by lifting and tightening the sagging facial tissue. The procedure may involve removing excess skin thats causing jowls, smoothing out wrinkles or folds, and tightening facial tissue. It can also have a rejuvenating effect on the areas below the eyes and the deep lines from the corners of the mouth to the sides of the nose.

It is important to bear in mind that a facelift is not a treatment for creases around the nose, superficial wrinkles, and irregularities in skin color. It also cannot stop the aging process or change your fundamental appearance.

Although there are newer and less invasive facial rejuvenation procedure, a surgical facelift is still one of the most popular today. This is because the procedure offers the most dramatic results.

Medical Tourism & Cosmetic Surgery

Costa Rica has now gained worldwide recognition as a respectable place to have medical work done. This reputation has also earned Costa Rica the name Beverly Hills South, others refer to it as the Fountain of Youth. Many people can fly down to Costa Rica, stay in a nice hotel, go on a tour, have some medical procedure done, recover in a nice hotel and then fly home for the same price or less than what it would just cost them to have the procedure at home. Even though these types of surgeries are usually not covered by insurance policies, people find that the cost is still incredibly low to have an operation done in Costa Rica. Most people claim between 30% and 70% savings depending on the type of surgery.

Costa Rica is an even more popular destination for these types of surgery due to specialized doctors, bilingual staff, and of course its close location and tropical setting. These surgeries are usually equally as fast, safe, and comfortable as services in North America but for significantly less. And as for privacy, most women especially love that they can go on vacation, pamper themselves, have their surgery, get a tan and come back looking like a million bucks for a fraction of the price. There are a variety of medical tourism companies, hospitals, and clinics emerging. It is difficult to make specific recomendations without knowing all about the patient so we will not try and do that in this section.

Alternatives To Plastic Surgery

  • Microdermabrasion: in this method, fine crystals are rapidly sprayed onto the skin removing superficial dead skin layer.
  • Botox: Botulinum Toxin is injected into the skin which temporarily paralyzes your muscles causing skin lines and wrinkles.
  • CoolSculpting: This technique works by freezing the adipocytes present under your skin. These are crystallized and ultimately killed. After that, your body will digest them leaving fat free skin.
  • Ultherapy: This involves using ultrasound energy for skin tightening giving smooth and healthy skin.
  • Facial Fillers: these are long term, short term, or permanent fillers. Which improves your skin quality without surgery.
  • Bio Stimulators: these are the boosters of collagen production. Increased collagen gives tight and youthful skin.

In the case of reconstructive surgery, breast prostheses may be considered an alternative to breast implants. Prostheses are an artificial body part. Artificial breasts are worn inside a suitable bra giving the appearance of natural breasts. It is useful for those who do not want to go for reconstructive surgery.

Length Of Stay In Costa Rica

Living in Costa Rica – Surgery is Cheaper

This also depends upon the type of surgery being performed. Complex surgeries require a long stay in the hospital. For example, if someone is going through reconstructive surgery for burns, the duration of stay in the hospital depends upon the percentage of the burnt area. It is referred to as total body surface area burnt . In cases of severe burns, the stay is longer. For breast tumor removal two methods are used. In a lumpectomy, only the tumor along with some surrounding tissue is removed and the patient is discharged the same day. While in the case of mastectomy, the whole breast tissue is removed leaving the chest flat. It requires an overnight stay at the hospital. 2 days are needed if the breasts are reconstructed after the removal of the tumor. Similarly, different cosmetic surgeries require a different stay at hospital time. Butt lift surgery demands variable time which depends on your pain tolerance and healing speed. But in most cases, a minimum of 10-14 days post-op stay in Costa Rica is required for the removal of stitches and for follow up checks, etc.

Reasons To Consider Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery is an option for many who want to enhance the shape of their bodies, render their nose or eyelids, or bring a better appearance to other areas of themselves. Not being happy with the way you look is something that a patient does not have to accept for their entire lives, and modern medicine has more options than ever to change problem areas that may make one feel insecure.

Sometimes drastic accidents can make one need plastic surgery. Mishaps in the workplace, falling down on the ice, bites from animals, burns, and sporting accidents can all leave marks on the body that the patient will want to make disappear as much as possible.

Birth defects and birthmarks such as cleft lips, issues like ear deformities, and skeletal imperfections can cause a patient very noticeable emotional barriers, and make one feel not at ease with themselves. Reconstructive breast surgery is common among women who have had the need to undergo a mastectomy.

If a patient has been successful in losing a huge amount of weight very quickly, they will be dealing with excess skin that proves very stubborn to shrink. Removing the skin is one way to positively render the appearance of the damage that was caused by the wear and tear of being overweight in the past.
