Eye Drops After Cataract Surgery

Why Do I Need Cataract Surgery

How to put eye drops properly after cataract surgery ?? explained in English

Theres nothing worse than seeing the world in a fog. What was once clear and vibrant is now dull and faded. Thats what living life with cataracts is like!

This is where cataract surgery comes in. Cataract surgery is the only way to treat cataracts. Yes, you can wear glasses or contacts to correct your vision, but theyll stop working if you have cataracts.

Cataracts form because proteins in the lens start clumping together. This is a gradual process, meaning that a cataract could take years or decades before its finished forming!

You may not notice a cataract when it first begins developing. This could even occur as early as your forties or fifties! Cataracts arent something you need to worry about until they affect your vision.

At this point, a cataract makes enjoying everyday activities impossible. These can include things like sewing, walking, cooking, fishing and so much more.

When you have a cataract that needs removal, it can be like looking through a foggy window. No matter how hard you try, theres no way to see through the fog.

This is a sure sign that you need to start considering cataract surgery! If you choose not to have cataract surgery, your vision will only continue to get worse. With cataract surgery, this is completely preventable!

Are There Any Potential Downsides To Dropless Cataract Surgery

There are no major drawbacks to Dropless cataract surgery. A very small number of patients may see spots in their vision for a few days following the surgery, which is the worst side effect.

Its a safe, effective surgery and the side effects are minimal. In our practice, our patients have loved having a no drop cataract surgery option.

Recovery Period From Cataract Surgery

The actual surgery only takes about 15 minutes to complete. Your doctor will keep you in the recovery area for about 30 minutes while your anesthesia wears off. You will then have to wear protective eyeglasses for a few hours while you sleep after. Most people will report clear vision after only a few hours, but you shouldnt be concerned if you notice distorted, blurry, or wavy vision. It can also be common to have bloodshot or red eyes as your eye heals. You should plan to take one to three days off of work in order to fully recover. If you still have these symptoms after a few days then report to your eye doctor. You will need to apply eye drops for a few weeks after surgery. The entire recovery period takes a few weeks to a month. Everyone heals differently so you will need to go to follow-up appointments and report your progress to your eye doctor. Make sure to follow his or her recommendations closely. If you need glasses after cataract surgery, you wont be able to get your new prescription until six weeks after the surgery when your eye has fully healed. Cataract surgery does have a high success rate and should improve your eyesight and allow you to resume normal activities once your eyes have healed.

Eye Drops After Cataract Surgery ~ deadmeatdesigns

Dry eye is commonly seen in people over the age of 55. Cataracts typically occur in older individuals, who may already have some symptoms of dry eye. It is also typical for symptoms of dry eye to first appear after cataract surgery. Heres what leads up to it.

    An unstable tear film

The most common cause of dry eye is an unstable tear film. This results in the ocular surface becoming temporarily dry. With age, the quality of the tear film diminishes. After cataract surgery, the eyelid constantly rubs against the tiny incision from the surgery when you blink, leading to irritation and scratchiness.

    Artificial tears can provide relief

Artificial tears are over-the-counter eye drops that can provide relief from dry eye symptoms. They lubricate the eye and augment the natural tear film. Artificial tears are available without prescription and can be used several times a day. The additional ocular surface lubrication provided by artificial tears can provide comfort after cataract surgery.

After the prescription eye drops have been tapered, some people develop dry eye. This is because some prescription eye drops provide supplemental lubrication. If this should occur, you can use the over-the-counter artificial tears for a few months after your surgery to improve comfort.

Can Eye Drops Work As A Cataract Surgery Alternative

Early research suggested lanosterol drops might help with age-related cataracts. Unfortunately, later studies could not replicate these results in humans.

While medical science is always advancing, we dont fully understand the human eye or cataracts. At present, a successful nonsurgical treatment for cataracts is not in the foreseeable future.

Many companies claim N-acetylcarnosine drops can dissolve cataracts. Some blogs and news outlets even run stories supporting these claims. Unfortunately, evidence again does not back up these claims.

Studies cannot repeat the results made in these claims in a controlled environment. The evidence that exists traces back to organizations that have a heavy financial interest in the eye drops working.

    Frequent Questions About Postop Drops

    1. Do I really need to use the prescribed eye drops after surgery even if I feel fine?

Yes. The postoperative eye drops are prescribed in order to minimize the risk of complications as well as helping to keep you comfortable.

    2. The drops sting. Can I stop using them?

No. It is normal for the drops to sting. The degree of sting ranges from not at all to a lot depending on the outer surface of the eye. The drier the surface is, the more an eye drop will sting. Also, some individuals have eyes that are just more sensitive and so stinging by itself isnt a sign of a problem. You may use artificial tears between your administrations of post-operative eye medication to help with the dryness and to minimize the sting. Please wait about a half hour after administering the post-op drops to begin using the artificial tears to ensure that the post-op drops will not be rinsed out.

    3. Do my drops have to be spaced apart by an exact number of hours?

Of course if you use an eye medicine twice a day, dont use them too close together. However, it doesnt have to be a precise interval. Most people find it easy to remember by instilling the drops in the morning and sometime in the evening.

    4. Do I have to continue to use my glaucoma eye drops after cataract surgery?

Yes. Even if you have had a stent placed during the cataract surgery, you should still continue to use your glaucoma eye drops as you normally would

    6. These post-operative drops are really expensive do I have to get them?

When To Seek Medical Advice After Cataract Surgery

You should seek medical attention and contact your eye surgeon as soon as you can if you have decreased vision or increased redness or pain. In rare cases, there can be complications that threaten your sight. Rare complications include endophthalmitis, which is inflammation in the eye due to infection. Patients that experience this usually have other health conditions that contribute to it, such as high blood pressure.

Be Vigilant About Any Unexpected Symptoms

Although some pain, redness, grittiness, and glare sensitivity are entirely normal immediately following your procedure, some symptoms can be a sign that your eye is not healing as it should. These symptoms include:

    • Increasing pain and redness
    • Headaches or nausea
    • Seeing floaters or flashing lights

If experiencing any of these symptoms, you should contact your eye surgeon immediately and without delay. If you are unable to get in touch with your usual ophthalmology clinic, you may want to contact your local optometrist or take yourself to the nearest hospital emergency department.

    Bathing After Cataract Surgery

Your surgery doesnt need to come at the expense of your personal hygiene, but you do need to avoid exposing the eye to direct water for about a week. You can resume bathing and washing your face the day after your surgery, as long as you are careful not to touch your eye and keep water out. Instead of splashing water directly on your face, use a washcloth to clean your face. Your surgery incisions will only take a few days to heal and close, but you should be careful not to get any water in your eye during your recovery period. You should always have your eyes closed when washing your face to avoid rubbing the eye.

    Important Points To Note:

    • Usually no stitches are required at the end of the operation. If it has been necessary to use a stitch, it will usually dissolve in 4 to 6 weeks if a dissolvable stitch has been used. You may feel a pricking sensation from this stitch. In some cases a non-dissolvable stitch is used. This will need to be removed at a follow up visit. You will be advised about which type of stitch has been used
    • You should wait 1 to 2 weeks before resuming your normal daily activities
    • You must not drive until you reach the minimum legal standard of vision. You can ask your optician about this when you go for your spectacle test following surgery
    • You do not normally need long term follow up in the Eye Clinic
    • If you have a pre-existing or newly diagnosed eye condition, you will be offered further follow up appointments in the Eye Clinic
    • The replacement lens in your eye does not wear out. However there is the risk that the membrane that lies behind the replacement lens can become cloudy. This is called Posterior Capsular Opacification or PCO. PCO develops at different rates in different eyes. It causes symptoms like blurred vision or glare. Sometimes patients think that their cataract has returned. If you think this is happening, then your Optician or GP will refer you to the Eye Clinic for treatment. This is a painless outpatient laser treatment and only takes a few minutes to perform

Even though there are a number of things you can do to pass the time while you are healing for surgery, there are some things you dont want to do in order to prevent any infection or disruption to the healing process. Dont rub your eyes. You also shouldnt drive until your eye doctor clears you. Dont go swimming or sit in a hot tub in order to prevent infection. While light exercise, like a walk, is fine, avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities. When bathing, dont get shampoo or soap in your eye. After surgery, you want to avoid sneezing or bending over to prevent pressure in the eye. Dont hang out in dusty areas to prevent irritants from getting into your eye. Its also best to avoid wind, pollen, and anything else that can get into the eye and cause irritation.

Is It Safe To Use Systane After Cataract Surgery

Systane is a prescription ophthalmic solution that is specially formulated to prevent various signs and symptoms of an unstable tear film. Systane moistens the eyes, thus, relieving dry eye symptoms such as irritation, burning, and discomfort. This product is superior to other traditional eye drops because it binds to the tears to form a gel-like film, offering long-lasting relief. It is safe to use Systane as a soothing eye drop after cataract surgery.

Can Cataract Surgery Be Done Without Eye Drops

As cataract surgery continues to evolve, eye drops may become a thing of the past. In fact, medications already exist which can reduce or eliminate eye drops after cataract surgery.

One common method is to combine all the eye drops into a single bottle. This eliminates the need for different bottles and different dosing schedules.

But going beyond that, antibiotic or steroid medication can be injected into the eye at the end of the cataract surgery. This medication can eliminate antibiotic or steroid eye drops.

An alternative way to provide the steroid medication is through a small implant placed within a pocket in the eyelid called the punctum. This allows for a slow release of steroid as you recover from cataract surgery.

These methods have their advantages but haven’t yet become the standard way to treat the eye after cataract surgery.
