Gastric Bypass Diet Before Surgery

Dietary Guidelines Post Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric Surgery Liquid Diet | Gastric Bypass | Pre-Op

Bariatric surgery doesn’t eliminate dieting altogether. It means that if patients adhere to the prescribed diet for the rest of their lives, they’ll lose the excess weight and keep it off. On the contrary, if you ever go off the diet, you will gradually regain the weight lost.

Its important to start implementing this diet even before the surgery because pre-surgery weight-loss helps the surgeon by making the laparoscopic approach easier and safer and increases the likelihood that the surgery can be completed less invasively.

Other dietary requirements are basic common-sense eating. With sensible eating and exercise habits , the weight-loss can be easily maintained after surgery.

The long-term goal of weight-loss surgery is to lose approximately 55 to 75 percent of your excess weight. The end result of weight-loss surgery is that patients will continue to require only small portions of food and eventually be able to tolerate all types of foods. Patients bodies will be satisfied with smaller amounts of food and they wont have continued cravings for larger quantities of food at mealtimes.

An ideal meal plan might look like a protein shake for breakfast, your food meal for lunch, protein shake for dinner, and then if needed another protein shake in the evening. Now if you prefer to have 2 shakes and 2 meals consisting of 4 oz. of pure protein like chicken, turkey or fish, and as many vegetables as you want and a healthy fat that is fine as well.

After 1 to 7 days of drinking clear liquids, you will be given permission to consume liquefied sources of protein. This stage of the post-op diet will usually last for one week .

Because of the patients smaller stomach size, the individual should have several smaller meals throughout the day. Your daily intake should be about 60-70 grams of protein and approximately 64 ounces of clear liquids not counting the fluid in the pureed foods.

Caffeinated and carbonated beverages should not be consumed. Refined sugars and simple carbohydrates should be avoided as well.

Below is a list of the pureed protein sources that are typically allowed by your dietitian or surgeon:

  • Non-fat cottage cheese
  • High protein, low sugar yogurt

Clear liquids should be sipped very slowly, and straws should not be used because they might bring unwanted air into the stomach, which could lead to discomfort.

It is necessary to take one or two multivitamins every day in order to prevent nutrient deficiencies. The multivitamins should be in chewable or liquid form during this time.

It is also important to supplement your diet with calcium citrate the recommended amount will usually be two or three doses with each dose ranging from 400 mg to 600 mg. Calcium citrate supplementation should be separated from the multivitamin dosages by at least two hours. This is because iron and calcium can interfere with each others absorption, leading you to not get the amount that your body needs.

Stage 4 Bariatric Diet: Solid Foods

Once youre able to tolerate soft foods, you may begin integrating firmer foods into your post-bariatric meal plan. Youll want to chop or dice foods and start slowly to see how your body responds. Its recommended that you only add one new food per day to accurately assess your bodys reaction. You may find that you have difficulty with dairy products or spicy foods.

Stage 4 of your bariatric diet carries over the high-protein requirements and daily intake of 64 oz. of water for proper hydration.

Foods to Avoid in Stage 4

Though solid foods are reintroduced at this stage, there are certain foods you cant eat after gastric bypass surgery, including:

At each and every stage of this diet, youll want to keep a few things in mind. Be sure to eat and drink slowly, keep your meals small, drink plenty of water between meals, chew thoroughly, focus on high-protein foods and avoid foods with high fat and sugar content.

What Will You Eat Before Bariatric Surgery

If you qualify for bariatric surgery, your team of professionals, including a surgeon and dietician, will recommend a diet, which may include restricting certain foods and medications. The diet may also include protein supplements, usually protein powders or shakes, decreasing all fats, decreasing sugary foods and drinks, and decreasing high-carbohydrate foods, like white bread and white pasta.

Many bariatric surgery centers put patients on an all-liquid diet as a way to promote rapid weight loss. However, other centers focus on long-term weight-loss and changing behavior to promote healthy eating habits.

âMost bariatric programs require working with a dietician for several months before surgery,â says Sharon Zarabi, RD, CDN, CPT, Bariatric Program Director, Lenox Hill Hospital, New York City. âMyself and my colleagues work on creating new eating habits and improving eating behavior, including incorporating more plant-based foods, more fiber, protein, healthy fats, and limiting carbohydrates.â

The Final Stage Of The Bariatric Diet: Progress Slowly Through Phases

At 3-4 weeks after surgery, you will transition to the first phase in Stage 4 of the bariatric diet. This is the puree phase of the diet, which focuses on low-fat and low-sugar semi-solid, soft foods. In this phase you can replace one protein shake with a small meal of pureed food that you consume slowly, along with 1 ounce of soft fruits or vegetables. You can gradually start eating 5-6 meals a day, as long as you eat very small portions and eat slowly. You will introduce lean proteins like scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, soft fish or tofu, low-fat beans, and soups, stews and casseroles.

At 6-8 weeks after surgery, you will graduate to the next phase in Stage 4 of the bariatric diet. This is your lifetime eating plan, where you will reintroduce regular foods in smaller portions, still taking time to eat slowly and chew your food very well. Your daily focus now and always will be on drinking 60-64 ounces of liquid to avoid dehydration, and eating lean proteins and low-fat, low-sugar foods. You also need to take the recommended vitamin and mineral supplements, because your post-surgery body cant absorb adequate nutrients from your food.

    Medications Before Gastric Sleeve Surgery

You may need to modify your medications and their dosages prior to surgery.

This is absolutely, unequivocally something that you need to discuss with your surgeon and primary care physician. No amount of reading online will give you an adequate answer.

You are a unique individual with specific health and medication needs and only medical professionals who are fully aware of your health and needs can make that call. Also, dont change anything about your medications without the guidance of your medical team.

What we can do is tell you to ask them, and you should!

Talk to your surgeon about your medications because you may need to modify your dosages in the days leading up to surgery. Thats something only they can help you with.

    Stage I: Clear Liquid Diet

Phase 4 gastric bypass sample menu.

Once the surgery is over, patient must lead his way towards recovery. The ideal food to consume in the first stage of recovery is clear liquid diet. As the name suggests, clear liquid diet consists of clear soups, water, meat stock, chicken stock, unsweetened drinks and some diet beverages that are clear in nature. 2 oz or 3 oz is the maximum limit of clear liquid diet and that too largely depends on tolerance and digestion capacities of the patient. Since the operated stomach is really small in size, the patient has to cope with the new feeling of fullness that comes from eating a limited amount of food items. Clear liquid diet is prescribed for first one or two days after gastric bypass surgery.

Disciplined Diet Before And After Weight

The decision to undergo bariatric surgery isnt easy. People suffering from obesity and its side effects come to this decision after years of struggling and failing to lose weight through diet and exercise.

Aside from choosing to undergo surgery after consulting with a physician, your biggest requirement is commitment to a lifestyle change of eating the right foods in the right portions, losing weight and keeping the weight off for the rest of your life. And that change must begin before surgery.

Bariatric Surgery Pre Op Diet Cheating

When you embark on your 3 month pre bariatric surgery diet program, you should remember that you havent yet had the surgery. Therefore, it is going to require more will-power and commitment to follow the dietary guidelines. Once in a rare while, it is acceptable to indulge yourself and deviate from the prescribed daily pre bariatric surgery menu plan. However, if you believe that you are getting trapped in a bariatric surgery pre op diet cheating cycle, you must inform your surgeon as soon as possible. Their nutrition specialist team will work closely with you to help you stay on course and be all set for a safe weight loss surgery.

    Days Before Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Up until this point youve been following the pre bariatric surgery Very Low Calorie Diet with the goal of losing weight and shrinking the liver.

But now that youre a mere 2 days from surgery, whats the goal? What are the diet prescriptions for this point in the pre-op journey?

Since the surgeon will be working on your stomach and around the intestinal tract, its EXTREMELY important that there is no food or other residue in your stomach or intestines.

Think about itwould you want food and other residues to accidentally fall into your body cavity during surgery?

    Hello, infections!

So, 2 days leading up to surgery its generally recommended to follow a liquids only diet. Some practices specify clear liquids only, but its tough to get enough protein that way. Thats why we say liquids only.

This way you can make use of protein soups and broths. Its the best of both worlds because you get your fluids, youre not causing residue build-up in the GI tract AND youre getting protein.

Liquid Diet For Weight Loss Surgery

Liquid diet after weight loss surgery is an extremely important stage in the diet plan. The time of a liquid diet is a recovery period for the body and stomach. The body learns how to tolerate and digest food after the surgery, so it should not be burdened by solid or even soft food at this stage. The liquid diet after bariatric surgery lasts for 4 weeks on average, but each patient should start adding some more solid food only when he/she feels ready for it. Besides, patients must follow a liquid diet to lose weight before surgery. The diet components and course are the same for the pre-op and post-op period, only the amount of liquids that are acceptable is modified by a dietician. Generally, a liquid diet for weight loss surgery is a very difficult period for patients, as it is an abrupt, sudden change, however, it is inevitable to avoid any side effects after the surgery, get prepared for the future change of eating habits, and achieve the weight loss results.
