What Is The Recovery Like From Oral Surgery

Dr. George Obeid, chairman, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

This really depends on the type of surgery being performed. As a general rule, you can expect there to be some level of bleeding that is temporary and can be controlled with the gauze that we give you. You can also expect there to be swelling. This is where most of the discomfort comes from. To control it, you will want to place an icepack on your face for 15 minutes at a time, rest for 15 minutes and then use it again. Just be careful not to irritate your skin, and use a light cloth if you need to. Simultaneously, you should use ibuprofen to keep the swelling and discomfort at minimum. The ice is typically only used for a day or two where the ibuprofen may be needed for a week or so. At Georgetown Dental Partners, we may also give you antibiotics to take in order to prevent an infection. When it comes to food, you will want to stick with things that are soft and either do not require chewing or can be chewed very easily . Buying these items ahead of time will make your recovery easier. Just remember to take it easy and not to push yourself. It is best to follow our instructions than to risk irritating your surgical site.

To find out if you need oral surgery or to discuss a surgical procedure in greater detail, call and schedule a consultation. We will be happy to answer any questions you have and set you on the road to surgery and a full recovery. Our offices are conveniently located in Georgetown, MA, and we are currently accepting new patients.

Preserve Your Smile With Our Dental Surgery Experience

An oral surgery procedure may be needed for one of several reasons. No matter what your situation is that requires surgery, you can rest assured that youll be in good hands. Dr. Miller has received advanced training in several types of oral surgery from the Medical University of South Carolina. Our state-of-the-art 3D CT scanner helps ensure successful oral surgery by taking detailed images, which we use for planning before your procedure begins.

Below are a few procedures we routinely perform at The Smile Center:

  • Teeth Extractions Removing your tooth isnt ever our first option. However, if your diseased or damaged tooth cant be saved through restorative treatment such as a root canal, then well gently remove it to protect your other teeth and gums.
  • Bone Grafts If your jawbone is not strong or thick enough for dental implants, Dr. Miller can add bone material to stimulate the growth of new bone cells. In a few months, your jaw will be ready for implant placement.
  • Sinus Lifts This procedure is a type of bone graft that adds bone to your upper jaw to make it strong enough for implants. It also moves your sinuses up slightly to make room for your implants.
  • Ridge Augmentations We can use one of several techniques to improve the quality and/or quantity of your gum tissue and jawbone structure. This procedure may be needed to get your mouth ready for dental implants, too.
