How Long After Cataract Surgery Can You Drive At Night

Stats About Driving At Night After Cataract Surgery To Make You Look Smart Around The Water Cooler

How long does cataract surgery recovery take?

In one of my earlier posts on this blog, I talked about the many benefits that can come with driving at night after cataract surgery. I mentioned how it can make your eyes feel more comfortable and also how it can help in the healing process. It is also a way to have a more comfortable and safe driving experience.

Cataract surgery comes with a risk of losing your vision. That risk is real and can be quite tragic. For someone like me whos had enough experience with the effects of severe cataracts, it can be a scary experience and can even lead to an emergency eye surgery. The best thing to do is to make sure that your vision is 100% good before driving at night.

As my doctor says, theres no point in driving with your eyes closed. Im sure you can imagine what its like when you drive with your eyes open. Its like looking through a keyhole. It can be pretty scary. If you have to drive at night after cataract surgery, try to wear your glasses for the first few hours after surgery. They can help you to see clearly, but they might not be able to fix the problem completely.

My doctor also told me to wear an eye patch for three or four months after cataract surgery to avoid night blindness. It was pretty annoying, but I guess I had to give in to the doctors decision. I guess I will need to give it a try, though.

Its a good idea because it reduces the amount of street lights that you see, which is good because it reduces glare.

Can I Drive Home After Cataract Surgery On One Eye

For the majority of cataract surgery patients, the eye doctor will say that they are fine to drive home on their own during daylight hours. This is if the patient is experiencing no visual fluctuations and no complications.

Can you see the day after cataract surgery?

After cataract surgery, expect your vision to begin improving within a few days. Your vision may be blurry at first as your eye heals and adjusts. Colors may seem brighter after your surgery because you are looking through a new, clear lens.

How To Use Your Eye Drops

After you are done with the surgery, you will be given eye drops in order to assist in helping your eye heal and prevent any infections.

Eye care is very important and should be taken seriously. Using your eye drops according to the advice given by the doctor is crucial. Some good practices to implement are:

  • Begin using your drops the morning after the operation
  • Use only on the eye that has been operated
  • Before using the eye drops, remember to wash your hands
  • Unless your doctor has advised otherwise, do not stop the use of your eye drops.
  • Do not let anyone else use your eye drops

When you have your post-operation, which will be in a 1-4 weeks time, you will be advised with further details on how to use your eye drops.

What Is The Typical Cataract Surgery Recovery Time

The recovery time after cataract operation will vary depending on the individuals circumstances. Do not be alarmed if your recovery time differs to a family member or friends recovery time.

Common post-operative symptoms include:

  • Most patients will experience black spots. These were present prior to surgery but are now more visible due to the greater amount of light entering the eye. You will get used to them and will learn to ignore them. If they do bother you, please discuss with your surgeon as in some instances they can be removed with laser treatment.
  • There will be halos around lights for the first week or two as the cornea recovers from surgery.
  • If a block was used, you may notice double vision or drooping of the eyelid in the first 48 hours.
  • Grittiness in the eye or even a feeling like there is a grain of sand in the eye can result from the very small incisions that have been made. This may take 3 or even 6 months to resolve but can be relieved with regular use of lubricants.

Cataract Surgery Miami & Fort Lauderdale

Most people can start to drive again within a day or two after cataract surgery. However, it is important to check with your eye doctor to make sure it is safe. There are a few things that can affect your ability to drive after cataract surgery, including:

The type of eye procedure you had

The type of anesthesia you had

    How your eye/eyes are healing

If you had cataract surgery with local anesthesia, you should be able to drive as soon as the anesthesia wears off. If you had cataract surgery with general anesthesia, it is important to wait until you are no longer feeling dizzy or sleepy before you drive.

After surgery, it is also important to make sure your eyes are healing properly. You should be able to see clearly and have good vision in both eyes before driving. If you have any questions or concerns about your eyes or vision, be sure to talk to your eye doctor.

It is also important to wait until your eyes have healed enough so that you can see well. This usually takes a few days, but it can take up to a few weeks. After surgery, your eye doctor will let you know when it is safe for you to start driving again.

Will I Need To Take Time Off Work

It isnt recommended that you return to work the same day as your cataract operation.

Each patient is different and when you can return to work will depend on the nature of your job, how strong your glasses are and whether or not you need new glasses.

If you wear very strong glasses, once youve had cataract surgery in one eye, you will have a noticeable difference in the vision between your two eyes. This will make it difficult to work. This imbalance will improve if you have further cataract surgery in your other eye.

Your surgeon will be able to advise you how long to take off work, based on your circumstances.

    Cooking After Cataract Surgery

Post surgery, it is quite normal to feel sluggish and lethargic which can have an influence on how often you cook. You may come to realise that it can get difficult whilst you are still in the healing phase.

You should give yourself some time off from cooking and possibly pre-prepare your meals before your surgery or you can buy pre-cooked meals which does not require much effort to prepare.

Activities To Avoid Following Cataract Surgery

Liquids, dust and particulate matter can cause serious complications after an eye surgery. While complications are very rare, it is very important that you follow the surgeons advice during your recovery process. In particular, all of the following activities should be avoided while a patient is recovering from cataract surgery:

    • Sneezing or vomiting
    • Exposing the eye to irritants, such as dust or wind
    • Rubbing the eyes

    Eye Prescription After Cataract Surgery

How long after cataract surgery can you drive? – Dr. Sriram Ramalingam

Its not a huge secret that cataract surgery changes the prescription of the eye. Many people see a large improvement in not only the quality of their vision after cataract surgery, but also their vision without glasses. In fact, there is a good chance you may not even need glasses after cataract surgery in order to drive!

This change in prescription comes from the artificial lens being placed in the eye. In fact, technology of this lens allows us to go beyond just simply changing the prescription of the eye. Advanced lenses can correct astigmatism or even eliminate reading glasses. Check out Your Complete Guide Of Lenses For Cataract Surgery to learn about all the different lens options with cataract surgery.

But not everyone will have perfect distance vision without glasses after cataract surgery.

    • If you dont correct your astigmatism during cataract surgery, this will affect your ability to see without glasses. You may desire a pair of glasses in order to see off in the distance.
    • The sophisticated calculations used by surgeons to eliminate the prescription of the eye arent 100%. Some people may have some residual prescription of the eye making it more difficult to see off in the distance without glasses.

Depending on blurry your distance vision is, this remaining prescription or astigmatism may limit how comfortable you feel while driving and you may need a pair of glasses to see your very best distance vision.

Recovery Time Is Essential Before Driving

Cataract surgery has different recovery periods, depending on the patients healing ability and safety precautions. You will need some time after the surgery to adjust to new changes with your vision.

It is difficult for many people to adjust to light sensitivity, causing discomfort while driving in the first week after surgery. Bear in mind that light sensitivity is temporary, and you can resume driving once it resolves.

Research shows that surgeons usually perform cataract surgery on one eye at a time. Patients who undergo this type of surgery may experience depth perception issues. In such a situation, it is wise to wait until your eyes adjust to light and resolve depth perception issues. Once resolves, you can resume driving.

How Soon Can You Drive After Cataract Surgery

In most cases, a patient can start driving again the day after they have cataract surgery. Because cataract surgery requires mild sedation, you won’t be able to drive right after your procedure. Youll need a trusted friend or family member to drive you home.

How Long Is The Cataract Surgery Recovery Period

The actual procedure generally only takes 15 minutes to complete, but your doctor will place you in a recovery area for around 30 minutes while the anesthesia wears off. Youll be asked to wear a protective eye shield for a few hours after the surgery and while you nap or sleep.

Although most people report clear vision a few hours after surgery, dont be alarmed if you notice blurry, distorted, or wavy vision. Its also common to notice red or bloodshot eyes as the eye heals. If these symptoms dont subside after a few days, report them to your eye doctor.

Expect to apply eye drops for the first few weeks after surgery. The entire recovery period generally takes anywhere from a few weeks to a full month. Since everyone heals differently, you should report your progress to your eye doctor and follow their recommendations closely.

Another scenario in which your vision in the eye that had surgery may be excellent, but you may want to avoid driving for a little while if the vision in your other eye is limited.

As we mentioned in the last section, your brain gets used to using your two eyes together. If your vision in the other eye is limited, you may not immediately feel safe until you get used to your two eyes working together.

Recovery Time Is Necessary Before Driving

After cataract surgery, patients need time to recover and adjust to the new changes with their vision. For some, light sensitivity can make it difficult to comfortably see while driving in the first few days after surgery. Light sensitivity is typically temporary and once it resolves, driving may safely resume.

It’s common for cataract surgery to be performed on one eye at a time so those who have only had one eye treated may notice depth perception issues. In such cases, it may be best to wait until the eyes have adjusted and depth perception issues have improved before driving.

When Will I Go Back To Work

Blurry vision during your early recovery will affect your ability to return to work. Like driving, it depends on the individual patient on when they can return to work. If your vision is extremely blurry, it may be best to take a few extra days off of work.

Doing any kind of work with blurry vision will be difficult and may be dangerous. If your vision isnt blurry, its not uncommon for cataract patients to be able to go to work within a few days.

This does depend on the type of work involved. Office employees can return faster than those who work in dusty environments. Being in a dusty environment could be detrimental to your recovery efforts.
