    Replace Eye Makeup Regularly

Is It Okay To Wear Eye Makeup After Cataract Surgery

Bacteria and fungi love makeup products, so its important to regularly change your eye makeup. Mascara and eyeliners are used directly on the eyelashes and eye margins, so its easy to introduce microorganisms to the eye. This can cause an infection if you are using old, contaminated products. We recommend replacing your mascara and eyeliners every 3 months. However, if you develop an eye infection you should avoid using eye makeup and dispose of any used eye makeup to prevent re-infection.

What Foods Should You Avoid After Cataract Surgery

As your eye heals from your cataract surgery, try to focus on maintaining a diet that is beneficial to your overall health, including fiber-rich whole foods, leafy green vegetables, and lean protein. The foods that you will want to avoid are the ones that are generally associated with poor eye health, including foods that are high in sugars or are high in refined carbohydrates . These foods can spike blood glucose levels in the body and can lead to damaging blood vessels in the eye, ultimately slowing down your recovery time after surgery. An easy way to do this is to avoid processed foods and foods that are broadly considered to be junk food.

When Can I Wear Makeup After Cataract Surgery

I really dont have a problem with you using cosmetics right after cataract surgery. So long as the products you use are good quality and fresh, so there are no contaminants in them, its okay to use them starting the next day after surgery. What I do worry about are two things: putting the makeup on and taking the makeup off.

You must be gentle and not push on your eye or scratch it with a mascara brush or eyeliner. Remember that your vision will be different after cataract surgery and you may not see your eyelids or the applicators the same way you did before cataract surgery until you are comfortable with your new vision.

You should be particularly careful not to rub your eye with cosmetic remover or get any debris falling into your eye as you clean it off. There are medicated pads that you can get over-the-counter at the drugstore or grocery that are specially made to do this gently and safely for your eyes. We use the same pads to clean your eyes before surgery. Some brands of these are: Ocusoft Lid Scrub, and Systane Lid Wipes.

So, I allow my patients to use make-up carefully and safely right after cataract surgery.

When Can I Wear Makeup After Laser Eye Surgery

After Laser Eye Surgery, its often a shock when you look in the mirror for the first time with your new and much greater level of visual clarity.

Ideally, the shock would come out along with something like:

    I look great without glasses.

I can see and I havent put my contact lenses in yet!

Yet unfortunately its often more like:

WOW, I didnt realise how many wrinkles I have!

If youre like me and are more inclined to come out with the latter, you may be raring to find out how long it will be until you can once again wear makeup after having Laser Eye Surgery.

In the short video below, expert laser eye surgeon Mr Glenn Carp offers advice on wearing makeup after Laser Eye Surgery and stresses the importance of avoiding the big threeeye shadow, eye liner, and mascara.

Your doctor may have you refrain from vigorous exercise for the first week or two after surgery. Restrict lifting or deep bending for several days after surgery as these activities can increase eye pressure. Generally, you should refrain from lifting over 20 pounds, swimming, sitting in a spa, running, and jogging for the first week.

How Soon After Cataract Surgery Can I Wear Eye Makeup? : MyFiki 2020

I may be wrong, but Mr Glenn Carp doesnt seem the type to adorn some blusher and mascara. Or at least if he does, he keeps the quirk well contained to outside of working hours.

This would be an impressive feat because as one of the UK and most likely the worlds leading Laser Eye Surgeons, Mr Glenn Carps work is his life. And so if theres anyone to listen to regarding dos and dont after Laser Eye Surgery, even when it comes to makeup, its him.

As Mr Carp explains in the video above its best practice to abstain from wearing eye makeup for a period of at least one week after Laser Eye Surgery.

Fortunately, this week-long makeup-free period doesnt include all types of face make-up. For example, lipstick is fine to use just a day or two after the treatment. Its only really the makeup that is applied in and around the eyes that needs to be strictly avoided for at least the first seven days.

During this time, its most important to avoid wearing the following cosmetics: eyeliner, eye shadow, and mascara. The stricter you are, the better, as you will avoid any unwanted fibres or liquids entering the eye, causing irritation, and prolonging the eyes recovery process.

Theres a bunch of other things you can do to ensure a smooth and speedy recovery. Of particular note here is to be careful not to rub your eyes whether its because youre once again removing eye makeup or because you cant believe what youre seeing.
