Dos and Don’ts After Cataract Surgery

During cataract surgery an incision will be made in your eye. This incision, until properly healed, can allow bacteria, dust and other foreign bodies that could cause infection to enter your eye. As such, its really important that you take care of your eye exactly as your surgeon advises, to ensure you minimise the risk of getting infected or developing other complications following your cataract surgery.

One common question regarding post-surgery eye-care is, how soon can I wear mascara and other makeup again?

It will usually be advised that you dont wear any mascara, eye makeup, eye creams, lotions or moisturisers for at least 2 weeks following your cataract surgery. This may differ slightly dependent on your individual circumstances, though, so its always best to ensure you ask your surgeon or optometrist for any advice of this sort, and they will give you guidance thats tailored specifically to you.

Furthermore, makeup and makeup application products brushes etc are known to harbour various harmful bacteria. Resultantly, its wise to purchase new products and tools prior to your cataract surgery, and, leave them unused and unopened until youre able to wear makeup again, then throw away your old products and begin to use the new, unopened ones.

Why Should You Wait To Wear Makeup After Cataract Surgery

It may seem unfair to make you wait before wearing makeup after your surgery, but it is for your good. The following are the dos and donts after cataract surgery.

  • To reduce the risk of infection. The particles in your makeup products could find their way into your eyes hence encouraging the growth of bacteria. An infected eye will need more treatment, which means your healing time will be even longer.
  • To avoid irritation. Some of the products you may use on your face may have ingredients that irritate your eyes. This may lead to reddening and even growth of bacteria hence, you may need further treatment.
  • Shop for new products. Doctors advise people that want to use makeup after eye surgery to get fresh products after the operation. This is because your old makeup may have lots of dust and germs that you dont need getting into your eye. So it is better to give your eyes a break as you restock your products.

Dont use makeup on your face and eyes, especially after your cataract operation. This is the easiest way of ensuring that the healing process is less complicated by eliminating any foreign substances.

However, if you choose to wear it, consider how long does it take for cataract incision to heal and take at least a week or two and ensure you get new products and tools. Finally, stay away from fake products that may have more harmful ingredients.

How To Apply Makeup After Cataract Surgery

When Can You Wear Eye Makeup After Cataract Surgery
  • Always consult your doctor whenever you start to apply minimal eye makeup after one week of the surgery.
  • Use new and unused eye makeup products to reduce the risk of contamination in the healing eyes.
  • Always clean your makeup brushes while applying makeup as bacteria build up in the brushes can cause eye infections.
  • Use good makeup removers after applying eye makeup during the healing process.
  • Always wear protective eyewear for smooth healing and avoiding eyestrain.
  • Use lubricating eye drops to comfort the healing eyes.
  • Cataract surgery should be carefully planned as you have to skip applying your favourite eye shadow while going to that great fun party, at least for some days. It is important to recover first and let your eyes heal and go with that natural look for some time.

Using And Removing Eye Makeup After Cataract Surgery

Hello everyone – I found this forum while I was researching IOL options a few months ago and found the information very helpful. Now that I’ve had my surgery, I’m still reading posts and still finding useful nuggets of advice. After much research and consideration, I had the Alcon IQ Toric lenses set for distance implanted in both eyes. I am three weeks out from my first eye and two weeks out from my second eye being done. I’ll post some thoughts about my experience with these lenses separately, but for now I’d like any of the women here who wear eye makeup to help me get past my anxiety about restarting the use of makeup as I have not yet done so.

My surgeon advised waiting two weeks after the second surgery so I am at that point now. I don’t wear a lot of eye makeup but I do feel I look much better with it on and certainly want to go back to that. I have read to get new makeup in order to avoid any bacterial contamination and to clean any brushes used. No problem with that. My biggest concern is taking the eye makeup OFF. Historically, I have used the little white pads saturated with oil free eye makeup remover and then followed that up with warm water using a washcloth. I have a fear of rubbing the pads too hard on my eyelids now and potentially causing problems with the IOL.

Thanks so much for any help provided!

How Long Should You Rest After Cataract Surgery

In comparison to other notable eye surgeries, the recovery time from cataract surgery is relatively quick. While each person heals differently, many patients report drastically better vision within the first 24 hours of the procedure. Plan on taking one to three days off of work to be sure you have enough time to rest, but it is normal to resume most normal activities within a couple of days. Simple diversions like reading, watching TV, writing, and walking are okay to resume as soon as you feel up for it after your eye surgery.

Still, the healing process needs to run its course and vision may fluctuate slightly for the first few weeks before fully stabilizing. Your eye should be structurally healed from surgery in approximately one month, but it is best to allow your doctor to determine when the recovery is complete.

As you heal, there are a few things to consider in the first two weeks after surgery that will help your recovery time:

    • Do not drive until after the first day following your surgery.
    • Do not perform heavy lifting or strenuous activities.
    • To help prevent infections, do not swim or use a hot tub.
    • Do your best to not rub your eye after surgery.
    • Do not wear eye makeup and consider avoiding face cream or lotion.
    • To prevent irritation of the eyes, avoid settings with higher levels of dust, wind, pollen, and dirt.
    • Wear sunglasses on bright days. This may need to continue for up to a year after cataract surgery.
