Why Do Asians Undergo Eyelid Surgery

People may wonder why there is so much interest surrounding Asian eyelid surgery . Some may also question the necessity of the double eyelid fold on the East Asian eye. There is much intrigue and skepticism surrounding the cultural obsession for larger eyes and the measures taken to emulate the stereotypical Western facial features. Some may claim that Asians are more inclined to conform to social trends and influences and undergo plastic surgery for social acceptance.

The eyes are a prominent feature that can be distinguished from the rest of the face and body because of its dynamic properties.

As such, the eyes are a unique trait for each individual and should not be copied from patient to patient. The eyes should be customized and tailored to the patients unique facial features and should optimize their facial harmony and balance. The eyelid surgeon should be fully aware of this, and offer his/her own surgical sensibility and aesthetic expertise in determining the best possible shape and size for each patient.

What Happens During Double Eyelid Surgery

There are two types of double eyelid surgery: incisional and non-incisional. Both types are outpatient procedures that require local anesthetic along with IV sedation or general anesthesia. Its important to note that although double eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure, the eyes are typically sensitive afterward, so youll need someone to drive you home.

The incisional procedure involves skin separation along a carefully measured and marked double eyelid line. The marked skin is removed, along with the orbicularis oculi muscle. Beneath eyelid skin, fat draping down over the lashes may be lifted to rest upon the new horizontal eyelid arched crease. Skin heals well after closure, and small sutures are removed four to five days afterward.

The non-incisional procedure is also called the buried suture technique, and it involves a series of tiny openings in the skin along a carefully measured and marked double eyelid line. Sutures passed through the openings are tightened until they form a crease. These sutures remain beneath the skin. Because they create the arched crease, they are not removed.

Upper Vs Lower Vs Double Eyelids

Double Eyelid Surgery in Korea for bigger, well

As mentioned, you can have this procedure done on one side of the eyelids or both, which is usually recommended to get a more balanced appearance.

  • Upper eyelid surgery
  • this is mostly done to address sagging or baggy upper eyelids. The eyelids can be causing vision loss, and often can even be paid for with insurance if the loss is dramatic enough. It also tends to make the biggest difference in opening up the eye.

    2. Lower eyelid surgery

this procedure is done to remove wrinkles and sagging happening on the lower eyelid. It can be very effective at reversing the appearance of aging and exhaustion of the eyes. Because the lower eyelids usually do not cause vision loss, this procedure is generally not covered by insurance.

    3. Double eyelid surgery

this surgery is both of the previous surgeries combined, and is often the most popular choice for patients. This way all concerns of aging signs around the eyes are addressed and a balance is achieved between both eyelids. If you are hoping to change your monolids to double eyelids this is also the preferred route for surgeons to take.

    What Are Double Eyelids

The term double eyelids refers to upper eyelids visually separated into upper and lower segments by an attractive horizontally arched crease when the eye is open. Eyelids that do not crease are called monolids. While both types of eyelids are natural and may be beautiful, some people with monolids choose to add an arch by the double eyelid procedure for the illusion of larger eyes, more open eyes, and a more wakeful and alert appearance. Other explanations offered for reshaping upper eyelids from a single lid to a double lid include:

    • Eyelid skin draping down and interfering with vision
    • One side is a single and one side is a double eyelid and you desire symmetry
    • Desire for eyes to appear larger
    • Eyeliner and/or other desired cosmetics are easier with double lids

I Had Korean Double Eyelid Surgery At 18 I Look Back Now With Regret

Years after going under the knife, writer Iris Kim examines her complicated relationship with Korean plastic surgery and impossible standards of beauty.

Most summers growing up, my parents shipped me off to my grandparents in Seoul. During the afternoons, I would sprawl out on a bamboo mat in the sweltering heat as my grandmother tuned in to a Korean drama or K-pop concert playing on the government-sponsored channels. I sat enraptured by the stick-thin and pale-complexioned Korean stars onscreen with their tragic melodramatic storylines, bubblegum pop tunes, and scandalous dance moves. They looked nothing like me, from their narrow jawlines to their enormous anime-like eyes and milky-white skin.

Why dont my eyes look like that? I asked my family gathered round the TV.

Thats because theyve all had double eyelid surgery, my aunt explained. Every single actress you see has gotten some type of surgery done. You can get the surgery, too, when youre older.

As I would walk home after my hakwon lessons with my grandfathers hand in mine, I would glance at the women passing us in the Bangbae-dong streets. Their eyes looked like the ones I saw onscreen: round and framed by a crease above the eyelid.

A minority of all Koreans are born with the fold, but most of my family members had naturally endowed double eyelids. It seemed like a cruel twist of fate to me at the time.

Youd look prettier with double eyelids. It would brighten up your face more.

    Double Eyelid Surgery Recovery

Although most of the swelling and bruising disappear within 2-4 weeks after surgery, double eyelid surgery recovery process as a whole is relatively slower than other surgeries. It might be frustrating for you to wait such as a long time but rest assured that even after 1 month, with some makeup, your eyes will look reasonably natural. After surgery, new skin tissues around your eyes will settle in and it would take at least 3 months to look natural in person. The speed of the recovery also depends on the thickness of skin and the type of surgery method. The healing process will be entirely completed and look flawlessly natural about 6 months to 1 year after surgery.

Under Eye Fat Repositioning & Grafting

As we age, fat clumps under our eyes and creates bags. In some people, fat can dissipate and create depressions which leads to dark circles. This causes us to look older, more tired and appear unhealthy. Under-eye fat repositioning releases the clumped fat through an internal incision and then spreads out that fat to create a younger, healthier and more vibrant look. Under eye fat grafting takes your fat from either your tummy through the belly button or from the back of the thigh. The fat is processed and grafted it into depressed areas.

Please note that in most cases, doctors prefer to use back of the thigh fat as it tends to last longer and be more effective than belly fat when being repositioned under the eye. This procedure can be done alone or in combination are among the most effective anti-aging procedures with results immediately seen after the removal of the taping . There is no external incision or stitch. It is all done on the inside of the lower eyelid.

    Types Of Surgery Method

There are mainly 3 different surgery methods for double eyelid surgery: Non Incision, Incision, and Partial Incision.

    1. Non Incision

The non incisional method is used to create natural looking eyelids without any incision. This was the first method out of the three that was founded many years ago, and was widely popular back then. As opposed to making incisions, it is done by making a few small slits/sulcus on the upper eyelid, and then connecting the levator muscle to the skin with the use of thread to create a crease.

This method is suitable for people who have thin eyelids and are looking for a procedure with fast recovery and natural results.

    Surgery Duration & Recovery

Local anesthesia with sedation will be used in the process and the whole duration of the procedure is approximately 30 minutes. No hospitalisation will be required thereafter. Stitches will be removed after 3 days and recovery usually takes about 5 days.

    2. Incision

This method is suitable for people who have thick and droopy eyelids with excess fat, or for people who are looking to do a revision of their existing double eyelids.

    Surgery Duration & Recovery

Local anesthesia with sedation will be used in the process and the whole duration of the procedure is approximately 1 hour. No hospitalisation is required thereafter. Stitches will be removed after 5-7 days and recovery usually takes about 1-2 weeks.

    3. Partial Incision

About The Asian Double Eyelid Operation

Many Asians lack an eyelid crease because of differences in the anatomy between an Asian eyelid compared to a Western eyelid. In Western eyelids, the union between the muscle opening the eyelid and the structure of the eyelid is higher, allowing for the formation of a crease. In addition, in Western eyelids, there are microscopic fibers connecting this junction to the eyelid skin allowing for the formation of a crease. In Asian eyelids, the union between the muscle and the structure of the eyelid is lower. There is also extra fat or puffiness in the eyelid. These factors work to prevent the formation of a well defined crease in the Asian eyelid.

Asian double eyelid surgery addresses these issues by adjusting the anatomy to create a natural appearing crease. Also, any extra fat or puffiness is removed to improve the definition of the eyelid crease. The incisions for the Asian eyelid operation are very similar to traditional eyelid surgery operations. In select patients, the double eyelid operation can be performed using sutures only. In these cases, the eyelid crease can be created using three or four separate sutures without a traditional incision. However, not every patient is a candidate for a suture only type of operation.

    Incisional Before And After

The final procedure involves a full-length incision from the frontal portion of the eye to the lateral, or ends, of the eye.

It will have the lengthiest recovery time and therefore the longest time until final results are seen, but it also has the lowest risk of the eyes reverting into their original shape once fully healed.

Overall, double eyelid surgery is mostly for Asian eyes which tend to be monolids or an eye shape that has a slimmer appearance. It is not specifically made for combating aging and sagging, but these are things that can be improved along with the procedure.

There are a variety of methods that can be used, including both categories of incisional and non-incisional procedures. This is important to consider, particularly if two of your main concerns are permanence and scarring, as this is the largest dividing factor between the results all the procedures offer.

If you have been uncomfortable with your eye shape and felt like wider, brighter eyes would improve your overall appearance this procedure is worth considering.

Natural results are always strived for by most doctors and should therefore not be a concern for those afraid of too drastic of a change between the original eye shape to the final eye shape once they are fully healed.

The procedure is quite common and great results are guaranteed in a country such as Korea where this has become one of the most routine procedures to have done.

What Techniques Are Used In Asian Eyelid Surgery

[id hospital review] before and after plastic surgery in korea(v-line, eye, nose and fat graft)

Asian eyelid surgery can be either incisional or non-incisional. Anchor blepharoplasty is an incisional method of creating a crease, giving the patient a double eyelid. To achieve this, the skin is cut, tissue is excised, and the skin is attached to a firm structure within the eyelid . While many doctors simply attach the skin to the levator muscle, Dr. Lee prefers to additionally attach the skin to a deeper structure, the tarsal plate, along with the levator muscle. Whereas the levator muscle moves with the eyelid, the tarsal plate is static. Attaching the skin to both structures allows for greater precision when placing the crease and also reduces the possibility of fold failure. Medial epicanthoplasty, another incisional technique, is often used in conjunction to crease surgery to remove any excess inner fold skin and allow the new eyelid crease to fold more smoothly.

The Double Suture and Twisting technique is a non-incisional method of creating a crease in the eyelid. Instead of being cut, the eyelid is simply stitched together. While the DST technique requires specific conditions in the patient to work to its full potential, it is an excellent technique for younger, qualified patients, as it is less invasive and involves less swelling and a shorter recovery than incisional techniques.
