What Is Oral And Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral and maxillofacial surgery encompasses a variety of procedures that involve surgery of the mouth , jaw , and face . Some people regard oral and maxillofacial surgery as an “upgraded” form of dental surgery, but the practice extends far beyond what a dentist can perform.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons train as dentists but undergo six additional years of education, including two to attain a medical degree .

Some oral and maxillofacial surgeons embark on further training to perform facial cosmetic surgery, treat conditions related to cancer, perform microvascular surgery of the head or neck, or correct congenital face and skull abnormalities in children .

Depending on the condition, oral and maxillofacial surgery may be performed as an inpatient, outpatient, scheduled, elective, or emergency procedure. OMSs often work alongside other surgeons to treat complex conditions or in cases involving severe head or facial trauma.

Why Choose An Oral Surgeon

Midland Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are the experts at managing conditions of the head, neck, mouth, and face, including the bones and soft tissues. They must complete 4â6 additional years of training beyond dental school. During this time, known as a residency, they gain hands-on experience performing surgical procedures in a hospital setting. Oral surgeons are trained to administer all forms of anesthesia, including local anesthesia, general anesthesia, nitrous oxide, and IV sedation. When a patient requires more complex diagnostics or surgery, a dentist will refer to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for care. Many oral surgeons are staffed at local hospitals where they provide urgent care to emergency facial trauma cases.

What Our Patients Have To Say

Midland Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

“Dr. Pagni is the best! Pure class, sense of humor, great doctor. My first visit was around 6 years ago when I got my wisdom teeth taken out. The operation when smooth and the recovery was instantaneous! I never even felt the need to take a Tylenol following the surgery as I had no pain! My second visit was last week for a consultation. My family dentist saw something he was unsure about in an x-ray. He told me to go see Pagni and get it checked out. Dr. Pagni saw me, said it was nothing, and let me go without paying a cent.”

How To Prepare

The preparation for oral and maxillofacial surgery can vary depending on the condition being treated and the aims of the surgery. If oral and maxillofacial surgery is indicated, you will meet with your surgeon to review the pre-operative results and walk through the suggested procedure step-by-step.

To fully comprehend what’s involved, do not hesitate to ask as many questions about not only the procedure but what to expect during recovery.

It is best to bring someone with you to drive you home. Even if only local anesthesia is used, you may experience significant pain after surgery, which can impair your ability to drive.
