Tmj And Tmd Treatment

The TMJ is the temporomandibular joint and is the small joint that hinges the lower jaw to the skull. Without it, you would be unable to open or close your mouth. TMD is an acronym for temporomandibular joint disorder, which causes problems with using your jaw. TMD is a very common condition and many dental offices dedicate part of their practice to it. If you have a TMJ disorder, then call us today so we can help you. Symptoms of TMD include:

  • Chronic earaches
  • Inability to open and close your jaw
  • Pain in the lower jaw

Treatments for TMJ disorder include bruxism treatment, medications, and physical therapy. Although surgery is also used, its not usually the first avenue of treatment. Since bruxism, which is grinding your teeth, is frequently the cause of TMJ disorder, its often first in the treatment regimen.

Many people refer to TMD or TMJ as lockjaw, but this is incorrect. Lockjaw occurs from tetanus and can be life-threatening without proper treatment. If you have lockjaw, you must be treated by a medical doctor rather than a dental professional.
