Soft Foods After Oral Surgery

Simple Foods That Are Satisfying

Soft Food Diet Post Dental Surgery

these happen to be my familys 3 go-to items

  • Mashed Potatoes

But this post will go WAY beyond just three things and I havent even told you what we like on our potatoes or pasta yet!

So lets begin talking about mashed potatoes, now I LOVE mashed potatoes and yes they are not hard to make, just peel, cut, boil, then mash. But if you are not feeling well and preparing food for yourself there are quicker, easier options not to forget about.

Other Post Dental Surgery Tips

  • DO Drink lots of water
  • If bleeding continues after an hour following surgery, you may try biting on a moist black tea bag. The black tea can assist with blood clotting.
  • Rinsing mouth out with water during first 24 hours is ok but rinse gently. After 24 hours, rinsing with warm salt water is recommended. Make rinse by mixing 1 tablespoon of salt with one cup of warm water. Do not try to dislodge any blood clots as this will prolong the healing process.

Your oral surgery is over and now you are on the way home. You have your prescriptions for an antibiotic and for pain medication. You might feel numb and a little disoriented, and you may be craving something to drink or eat.

Two points are essential in choosing foods to eat after oral surgery. First, you must not disturb the blood clot from forming where the tooth was extracted or where the surgery took place. Second, you will want to nourish your body with proper hydration, nutrients, vitamins and minerals so the healing process can start.

What Foods To Avoid

Getting the right nutrients after surgery is an important part of the recovery process. But many of the foods you are used to getting healthy calories from can do damage to your mouth right after a dental procedure. We will discuss the alternatives, but avoid certain food categories including:

  • Hard-to-chew foods can impact the surgery site, dislodge blood clots, and delay healing. This includes nuts, chips, beef jerky, and raw vegetables.
  • Grains and seeds can get lodged in extraction sites and complicate healing. This includes rice and quinoa.
  • Crunchy and crumbly food like cookies and burnt toast. Crumbs can also enter wounds in your mouth and lead to infection.
  • Spicy or acidic foods can irritate wounds and cause discomfort. This includes citrus drinks that are high in acid.

When To Start Eating After Tooth Extraction

You can resume eating after 24 hours of the surgery. You can consume soft foods immediately after the surgery but it is better to have smoothies or shakes. The reason why its better to have liquids in the first 24-hours is that you dont put pressure on the teeth to chew. Chewing on hard foods especially during this time can be dangerous and cause bleeding or infections.

A balanced diet consists of proteins, fruits, vegetables, starches, and healthy fats. Whether eating a liquid diet or a soft diet after surgery, you can balance your meals to ensure you are getting adequate nutrients.

Adequate dietary protein will aid in your healing process. Therefore, have protein as part of each meal, no matter the consistency.

For example, in a smoothie, add a protein powder or yogurt.

After surgery, the consistency of your diet will vary from liquid, pureed, or soft foods. As the wounds heal, you will be able to advance your diet.

Small frequent meals may be easier to tolerate. Foods containing tomatoes, onion, pepper, or spices may be irritating. Additionally, acidic fruit juices may cause a burning sensation.

On the day of oral surgery, you may not be able to chew semi-solid or solid foods due to tenderness and swelling in your mouth, therefore the goal is to receive 48 to 64 oz. of liquids daily.

A liquid diet includes fruit and vegetable juices, water, and caffeine-free beverages like tea and coffee, lukewarm pureed soups, gelatin, and smoothies. Refrain from using a straw, because the sucking action can cause excess strain, move the newly formed blood clot and delay your recovery.

Be mindful of the amount of sugar in liquid form that you consume on a daily basis. Balance the drinks with healthy fats and protein.

Please see the sample breakfast smoothie below as an example.

What To Eat After Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Best Foods After Dental Implant Surgery | Dr. Parsa Zadeh

One of the reasons why tooth extractions happen is wisdom teeth. They are also called the third molars and cause a lot of pain. On the other end, cavities can also damage the teeth to an extent that extraction is the only option for the dentist. In both cases, the patient must be prepared for post-op care and diet plays a huge role in it.

The most common advice from dentists is to consume a soft-food diet that is easy on the teeth as well as ones stomach.

Keep in mind that since your gum tissue is healing, chewing may be hard, so soft food is an excellent solution. Furthermore, due to bite alterations, your food may not break enough for easy digestion. For easy digestion, you can incorporate certain soft but nutritious foods.

The first 24-48 hours are crucial during the recovery period. It is important to be extra cautious during this time and consume liquid or soft foods. Smoothies, shakes, pureed food, or mashed food are great during this period. Slowly and steadily you can move on to having solid foods but make sure to avoid hard and sticky foods. Keep an eye on your diet until a month at least or until the surgical site is fully healed.

Moving on we are going to discuss the different soft yet healthy foods you can try for a faster recovery after wisdom teeth removal or general extraction.

Here is a list of foods to try for each meal of the day in case you are wondering what to eat after extraction:

No Alcohol Or Smoking

Pinterest ⢠The worldâs catalog of ideas

We know it is tempting for you to reach for that glass of red wine after surgery. However, it does more bad than good to you after a dental surgery such as a tooth extraction. Alcohol may numb the pain for a while but in the long run, it does nothing but delays the healing process. It increases the risk of infection on the surgical site. The same possibility is there if you smoke after the extraction. It dehydrates the mouth and if you take a puff too hard, your stitches can open too. Dry socket is another one of the problems if you continue to smoke and have alcohol.
