Hooded Eye Surgery Before And After

Your Eye Shape And Visual Impairment

Hooded Eye Surgery – Before and After

All eye shapes are beautiful, as the previously cited articles can attest. However, aging effects certain eye shapes differently. As we age, our skin, especially the thin, sensitive skin around your eyes begins to lose its elasticity. With the help of gravity, the skin immediately below your eyebrows will inevitably begin to sag.

Although all people experience this change at some point in their lives, it more severely affects those with hooded and mono-lidded eyes. The lack of physical space between their eyelash line and eyebrow line will eventually allow the skin below the eyebrow to sag over the top of the eye. Unfortunately, this will increasingly block the top-most-part of your vision.

Patient 1 Before And Six Months After Upper Blepharoplasty Surgery

These photographs show a woman in her mid 50s with a moderate amount of excess upper eyelid skin. The excess skin weighs down her upper eyelids and causes her to have a melancholic, tired appearance. She is unable to wear eye makeup because the excess skin extends down to her eyelash line. After surgery, she looks younger and more youthful. Her eyes open wider and there is a good platform above the eyelashes to apply eye makeup. Also notice how she looks happier, even though her facial expression is the same. You can test this by covering up the lower face with your fingers. Opening her eyes brightens her whole face.

Note how she still looks like herself and doesnt look surgical. Without seeing her before surgery photos, it would be very difficult to tell that she has had any eyelid surgery. The natural look is a hallmark of Dr. Kapadias style, which you will see in photos throughout this website.

Solutions To Correct Droopy Eyes & Hooded Eyelids

Your eyelids do more than protect your eyes from dust, wind, and sunlight. They give your eyes their shape and appearance and can affect how your face looks. Droopy upper eyelids can give your eyes a hooded appearance and make you look worn out, sleepy, and older than you really are. Hooded Eyelids can be saggy from birth, or they can droop as a result of ageing, eye injury, or an underlying medical condition.

There are several ways to improve the aesthetic appearance of hooded eyelids. Injectables, upper blepharoplasty, or a brow lift surgery can help lift your upper eyelids and help make your eyes look bigger, brighter, and younger.

If your hooded eyelid restricts your vision you may be able to claim a Medicare subsidy for eyelid surgery if you meet the strict criteria.

Dr Hunt and Dr Maryam perform surgical and non-surgical eyelid lifting procedures in Sydney NSW. Their techniques aim to bring out the eyes, make you look less tired and restore your youthful appearance.

Hooded Eyelid Surgery Solutions

Dr. Christopher Zoumalan is a cosmetic surgeon specializing in hooded eyelid surgery. There are minimally invasive surgical procedures that return full visual range and change the eyelid shape if you desire. These procedures are typically considered cosmetic. However, if your upper visual range is severely impaired, then your insurance provider may cover part or all of your procedure.

  • Blepharoplasty: This procedure removes excess skin and fat from the upper and lower eyelids. The surgery will remove the heavy hooded effect exacerbated by age. It gives you a more alert appearance and returning your full upper visual range. Oftentimes, and upper eyelid blepharoplasty can be performed in the office while you are awake using just local anesthesia. Based on your consultation with Dr. Zoumalan, you may opt for an additional procedure to further improve other signs of aging. A brow lift and ptosis surgery, also known as droopy eyelid surgery, are the most common choices.
  • Double Eyelid Surgery: As an experienced oculoplastic surgeon, Dr. Zoumalan is one of only a small percentage of cosmetic surgeons specifically trained to perform Asian eyelid surgery . This is a very specific type of upper eyelid blepharoplasty that pays particular importance to the creation of a double eyelid on someone who naturally has a mono-lid.

These photos show a woman in her late 40s before and after upper blepharoplasty surgery. This patient is younger than the patients shown above and has less excess eyelid skin, but you can still notice a big improvement from surgery. More skin was removed from the patients right side than the left to improve symmetry.

Removing the excess skin helps frame her eyes in a better way and highlights the beauty of her stunning blue eyes. The beauty of the eyes can be further enhanced with eye makeup when desired. Prior to surgery, makeup would have been covered by the extra skin.

When Should Hooded Eyelids Be Treated

Some people find the sagginess of their eyelids barely noticeable and it is not bothering them.

For other people, saggy upper eyelids can become troublesome when they cause the following problems:

    • Aesthetic problems: drooping eyelids can make your eyes look puffy and uneven. Also, squinting too much makes your eyes look smaller and more wrinkled. Moreover, a lot of people with hooded eyelids tilt their heads back while theyre speaking so they can see better. They do this even when having a conversation, which can make the face look weird and off-putting
    • Vision problems: if the eyelid drops too much, it can obstruct the pupils, block the vision, and make things look blurry
    • Dry eyes: saggy eyelids cant keep your eyes as moist as they should be. This can make the eyes become dry and irritated
    • Headaches: eyelids that obstruct your vision can make you squint to see better. Squinting for a long period of time can strain the muscles around your eyes which can lead to headaches

Your surgeon will investigate if your sleepy eyes have an underlying problem especially if you noticed other symptoms like migraines and headaches since the drooping started.

The Benefits Of Eyelid Surgery For Hooded Eyes

Eyelid surgery can target either the upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both. Upper eyelid surgery tends to target hooded eyes. But if you have puffiness or eye bags, then lower eyelid surgery could also remove excess tissue from the lower eyelid area. Its common for patients to have either surgery or have both at the same time. The benefit of combining the two procedures is that you have one surgery and one eyelid recovery period.

There are several key benefits of eyelid surgery, including:

    • Minimal scarring
    • Long-term improvement and results
    • Correct visual impairments

Removing excess skin and tissue and tightening the eyes can have a dramatic look on your appearance. It can make you look younger and reduce the appearance of tiredness. Its completely normal to have or develop hooded eyes. While some people like how they look, others would prefer to get rid of them. It entirely comes down to personal preference.

Eyelid surgery is probably much quicker than you may think. The procedure itself takes around 45 minutes, and the pain is minimal. Any discomfort you have is manageable by over the counter painkillers and eye ointment from your doctor.

You need to follow certain post-operative care guidelines after an eye lifting surgery.

Here are some post-operative guidelines you need to follow:

    • Apply ice pads or packs on your eyes and cheek for the first 48 hours after the surgery. This helps minimise swelling and skin discolouration.
    • Keeping your head elevated helps minimise swelling. A recliner will work best, but adding an extra pillow to your bed also works.
    • You can only wear contact lenses at least two weeks after the surgery.
    • Extreme physical activity is discouraged within the first two weeks of the surgery. Light walking may be done three days after the surgery. Aerobic exercise, weight training, heavy lifting, and straining may only be gradually resumed three weeks after surgery.
    • Sun exposure, sun lamps, and tanning beds should be avoided for six weeks after the surgery. Heat will cause the face to swell. Wearing a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher is therefore recommended.
    • Swelling of the eyes is normal. Usually, it will just be gone within two weeks after the surgery for hooded eyes. In some cases, it will take up to six months for the swelling to completely subside.
    • Take only medications that were prescribed by your surgeon.
    • Wearing of makeup can be resumed seven to ten days after the eye cosmetic surgery.

Hooded Eyelid Surgery: Everything We Know

Bilateral Upper Blepharoplasty And Direct Brow Lift

This patient had significant amounts of sagging skin affecting the upper eyelid. However, blepharoplasty alone would not be sufficient to fully deal with the problem as there was also significant brow descent causing compaction of the upper eyelid tissues. There is always a wide choice of brow lifting techniques, but given the extent of the brow droop, only a direct brow lift would provide a sufficiently powerful lift. This procedure requires a small incision above the brow hairline which usually settles well. The patient elected for an upper lid blepharoplasty and direct brow lift with excellent results.

Bilateral upper and lower lid blepharoplasty with internal browpexySkin treatments with Profhilo

Upper lid blepharoplasty was performed along with an internal browpexy to raise the brow and to relieve the upper lid compaction caused by crowding of the brow. Profhilo treatments were undertaken postoperatively to reduce lines and create a gentle lift throughout the face.

What To Expect After Blepharoplasty Eyelid Surgery

    ST Before and AFter image

After getting treated with blepharoplasty, patients should expect to go home the same day. After a few days of surgery, a patient may experience some bruising, swelling and discomfort. A patient may also experience little pain but it can be managed with the prescribed medications by the doctor. Apart from these issues, a patient may also experience a double vision, temporary sensitivity to light, blurred vision and watery eyes.

Most of the patient will be recovered from blepharoplasty eyelid surgery after a few weeks but it may also return to work very shortly after the eye lift surgery takes place. So, at some point of time, it is very important to avoid strenuous activities just like jogging and heavy lifting until a doctor allows you to do so. There will be a need to avoid lowering the head during the recovery time because this can put some pressure on the sutures.
